The METU Academic Writing Center (AWC) is proud to announce another webinar titled "Critical Considerations in Written Academic Discourse in English" by our invited speaker, Prof. Dr. Hacer Hande Uysal, on Thursday, May 23 at 17.00-18.00 (Ankara Time).

Hacer Hande Uysal is a professor of English Language Teaching in Hacettepe University. She received her MA in English Education and PhD in Foreign Language and ESL Education from the University of Iowa with minors in Teaching Writing and Second Language Writing, respectively. Her main research interests are second language writing, contrastive rhetoric, corpus linguistics, early language teaching and language teacher education. She served as the founding editor for "The Journal of Language Teaching and Learning," and established and directed the "English Academic Writing and Research Center" at Gazi University.

This presentation will first explain the socio-cultural, cognitive, and linguistic dimensions of academic writing and highlight the most problematic areas in student writing. Then, specific suggestions will be given considering each section of a research paper, such as writing a critical literature review. We will also discuss challenges in developing effective argumentation and logical thinking in English, common paragraph-level, sentence/word-level problems, and plagiarism.
